One Skein Photo Challenge: 14/52

Here we are in week 14 of my one skein photo challenge. Nothing spectacular this week, but the point was to explore: I didn't know quite what was going to happen when I put the yarn behind glass and bounceded the flash in different directions, so I figured it out. This is the best of the bunch.

232mm, 1/100 @ f/5.6, ISO 400, flash manually adjusted and bounced
Hope you're having a good weekend!

This officially marks the completion of one-quarter of my one skein photo challenge! Hard to believe, since that means we're also about a quarter of the way through 2018.

This week I wanted to do a different take on my photo from week 2. Struggling with new ideas? Who, me? Maybe a little. I also pushed the development a bit in darktable to get something more interesting. Nothing radical, mind you, just retrieving some of the colour and feel.

Happy Easter (a bit early)!

One Skein Photo Challenge: 12/52

Almost a quarter of the way through my one skein photo challenge! This week, I wanted to play with backlighting to give myself more practice with exposing for backlit subjects. Behold, my filthy basement window (some horrific dirt has been edited out)!

Happy knitting! Happy shooting!

One Skein Photo Challenge: 11/52

I can't believe I'm more than 1/5 through my one skein photo challenge (and that means we're more than 1/5 through the year, I think...). This one isn't perfect, but it's close to what I was trying for last week, so I'll count it as a success. Would have done a better edit, but it is late!

37mm, 3.2" @ f/18, ISO 100, manually-fired flash
Cheers!

One Skein Photo Challenge: 10/52

This week's one skein photo challenge was a bit of a failure, but I learned a lot about light in the process. I almost had it figured out when I was interrupted by a roaming toddler (not the one who poured juice on my laptop last night...). Maybe I'll get it right next time. I think it's as valuable to post my failures as it is to post my wins.

Still coughing up a storm, but back in the saddle for my one skein photo challenge. Not happy with any of the things I tried this week, but I suppose that's the nature of the beast. They generated some ideas, at least; I just didn't have time to execute the newer, possibly better, ideas. But maybe it's a valuable exercise anyway, to get from here to there.

Two photos to make up for last week's sick days. Playing with focus. Intentionally unfocused (manual) in the first shot. Intentional camera motion blur in the second shot--panning a still subject with a long exposure, although you can't see much of the motion.

Playing with reflections for this week's one skein photo challenge image! The reflection in the mirror was obvious, but partway through shooting, I noticed the other reflection and played around with it a bit.

Introductory post on exposure coming soon (it's a loooooong one, with a lot of examples, so it's taking me awhile).

In before the last day for my one skein photo challenge!

Last time I took the far-off view so I thought this time I should get in close. Something about the colour seems a bit off, but I can't seem to get it quite right in post (probably because I shot under indoor light and didn't have any particularly great neutrals for WB adjustment).

Here's week 5 of my one skein photo challenge. Playing with composition a bit. If I hadn't been running behind, I'd have brought the background to a proper white in post-production. But I am running behind and have very little time to get this up, so here we are.

Manual exposure, 1/250, f/5.6, ISO 400, manual bounced flash

One Skein Photo Challenge: 4/52

It's been a doozy of a week, so today's image for my one skein photo challenge was taken rather hastily and leaves a lot to be desired. C'est la vie.

You win some, you lose some.

One Skein Photo Challenge: 3/52

How am I already on week three of my one skein photo challenge? Oh well. Moving right along.

If photography consists of light management, I figured it was high time to take a hands-on approach to managing my light. So I did.

Long exposure (8/5 sec), in a dark room, light by a small flashlight. F/5.6; in hindsight, I should have stopped down a bit for more depth of field and a sharper photo. (ISO 400 because my flashlight was starting to die). And I possibly should have used manual focus. And used a sharper lens, but I was feeling lazy. I'm reasonably pleased with the effect regardless.

It's week two of my one skein photo challenge! This week my yarn became air-bound. (No idea what I'm talking about? Check out this post.)

Not impressed with the outcome this time, but it was the best I could get after an exhausting week (I rejected many, many similar shots). I may revisit the concept in the future and see if I can't fix the execution.

Without further ado...

One Skein Photo Challenge: Coming in 2018

Just a heads up--I'll be undertaking a self-devised photo challenge in 2018. The "rules" are simple:

1. Select one skein or ball of yarn
2. Photograph that skein or ball of yarn every week of 2018
3. The yarn must be the star of the photo, but there can be supporting characters
4. The yarn ball may be transformed into other things, such as a hank or a swatch

I will attempt to post my best photo here every week (is that a promise or a warning?).

If you'd like to play along, please do! You don't have to pick a ball of yarn; any single object is fine. Feel free to drop a comment down below stating your intentions, and link to your blog, of course!
